Research in the Division covers a wide variety of areas in the Physical Sciences, including fundamental investigations in String Theory, Particle Phenomenology, Field Theory, Condensed Matter Physics, both theoretical and experimental, Soft-Matter and Complex Systems, Biology-Inspired Physics, Biomolecular Structure and Biophysics, Atomic and Optical Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics, and cutting-edge Applied Physics research including MEMS-based and Fibre-Optic Sensors, Multifunctional Materials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, Super-Resolution Fluorescence Microscopy, Nano-Scale Imaging, Optics and Microfluidics, Energy- and Health-Monitoring Instrumentation, and Cryogenic Technologies, including Cryocoolers, Cryogenic Instrumentation, and Cryogenic treatment on materials.
The Mathematics department is active in research in most areas of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra and number theory, analysis, discrete mathematics, geometry/topology, mathematical finance, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, representation theory, and time-series analysis.
