History

1890s

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a successful industrialist, decided to set up a world class university in India using his personal wealth. He strongly believed in the role of scientific research and higher education in social and economic transformation.

the support of the Mysore State, whose rulers also shared his commitment towards education and research. The Regent Queen Maharani Kempananjammani Vani Vilasa Sannidhana – her son Krishnaraja Wadiyar was a minor then – provided 371 acres and 16 guntas of land in Bangalore, funds for capital expenditure, and an annual contribution for Tata’s ambitious project. The remaining money to set up IISc came from the colonial government of India.

1904s

After overcoming several hurdles, including those resulting from Tata’s untimely death in the summer of 1904, IISc finally came into existence on 27 May 1909 in Bangalore following a vesting order and resolution passed by the government of India to establish the Institute. Its first Director was the English chemist Morris Travers. Twenty-four students joined when the Institute opened its doors to students in 1911.

Tackling Climate Change – 36% reduction of emissions by 2025

Brief Overview of Carbon Footprint and Decarbonization Ambitions

Per Capita carbon footprint of IISc is around 4.5 tonnes of CO2 in 2020. The institute plans to deploy solar panels in available roof top areas of buildings, which is around 13,560 square meters and expected to reduce 8% of our emissions. We have plan to replace diesel with piped natural gas with an objective to reduce 21% of emissions and deploy solar panels on the ground covering 1 hectare of land in Challakere campus to reduce emissions by 7%. Thus, total reduction in CO2 emissions being planned by 2025 is 36%.

Examples of Measures Taken to Reduce Emissions, with a Particular Focus on Energy Use
(Scope 1 and 2 Emissions)

  • Zero-emission transportation: Zero emission transportation for small, 4-seater EV vehicles, bikes etc. Students are encouraged to use bicycles instead of motorized vehicles. Faculty/ staff encouraged to utilize EV vehicle services for commuting within the campus.
  • Replacement of old air conditioners with new energy efficient models.

Bengaluru is connected by air, rail and road to all the metropolises and most major cities of the country. Also, one can fly direct to Bengaluru from several international airports

IISc is about 35kms from the airport. One could take either a prepaid taxi (currently, costs Rs. 750, and the counter is available near the exit of the Airport Building), or a city taxi (costs about Rs. 700, and a queue for the same is just outside the airport building).
